What is the purpose of your life? I imagine you may have asked yourself “what is my purpose?” many times, especially when the answer doesn’t seem clear. Conversely, you may be one of the lucky ones and know exactly why you are here and what you are learning. You may even feel driven towards relentlessly achieving one goal after another. That is until one day you have got there or you have not got there and then suddenly there are no more goals in the pipeline.
There may be a period of change in one of your life’s different stages. You may feel out on a limb whilst adjusting from one phase to another. (All stress is the adjustment to a new situation until you are used to it or accept it). Leaving school, getting a job, leaving home, renting your own place, becoming a parent, entering the mortgage race, rearing a family and learning that children demand that you put them first at all times are all adjustments. Ageing is another. What you want in your 30’s will not be what you want in your 40’s and turning 60 can be a big psychological shock for many people. As you age, you will become more yin than yang. This is normal. It is normal that you will want time to be alone more and quieter surroundings.
Children are all ‘yang’; out there, on the go, loud, spending time together in groups. Teenagers continue the ‘yang’ out there mode. And so do young adults out partying until dawn. And then you begin to come inwards as you bring children into the world and you adjust to someone needing your undivided attention 24/7. As they grow they keep you on the go all day. (I have assumed that you have overcome all the heartbreaks that occur on the love ladder on the way to your perfect partner to produce these children). Each of your life stages brings its own challenges, with health challenges being the most prevalent with ageing. Have you ever spent time with elderly people whose sole topic of conversation is the state of their bodies?
During the in-between stages, you may feel a ‘void’, a ‘not knowing’ what you are supposed to be doing and not knowing why you are here. Or you may know exactly what you want but it eludes you for so long that you give up on it or you feel disappointed or let down by life. This is the time to go within and find that part of you that never changes, that part of you that has incarnated many times and has had many bodies. You are not your body, if you were you would still be able to be inside your body as it was when you were twenty. Your twenty year old body does not exist now and neither do all your other bodies like your six year old body, or your twelve year old body from childhood. You are changing and constantly updating.
Do you see now that none of it is permanent? The only permanent thing in your life is your inner divine spark, your soul. Your soul is never ending, it is here for good and your soul loves expansion. It doesn’t like to be held up or trapped inside your mind limitations and will drive you on to learn. Everything else is impermanent; your body, your marriage, your house, all your possessions.
Death is necessary whether we like it or not. Would you honestly want to go through all of that again without the wisdom you now have? Would you like to still be here in a thousand years or would you like a change of clothes, a new personality, a new and young agile body? To move on, you must let go of the old. This is where death comes in. Imagine if all our ancestors from the past four hundred years were all alive. It doesn’t bear thinking about. There wouldn’t be room for us all. Your ego fears your death because it thrives on fear and impermanence but your soul does not. Those of you who are lucky enough to transcend your fear of death know this. People who have had near death experiences know this and tell us stories of beautiful lights and tunnels and relatives who wait for us with loving open hearts. So many of these people have come back and are alive again and so many of them tell us the same story so it must have some truth in it.
So when you go through a time of not knowing your purpose, or getting lost for a while, or being jobless, or going without money, or illness, or having your children leave home or any of the other challenges that life brings to you, remember to pray directly to your Higher Self. To that spark of divinity that resides inside you that is never ever changing. Don’t allow your Ego to edge God out (EGO), trust that all of these challenges are passing through as you grow and grow from within. Trust that there is a never ending growing purpose to your existence and that is why you are here. Trust that love will supersede all and try to find that love inside your heart and see if you can scatter your love wherever you can.
Pray and meditate more often for what you wish to have happen in your life. Understand that is on its way and will be here in your life as soon as you are truly ready to receive it. Use this affirmation or tailor one yourself along the same lines “I trust that I am guided through my life even if it doesn’t feel like it at times.”. Affirmations need to be written out over and over again until you truly believe them.
